For the first time in my life I took part in the "Geinloop" which was held last Saturday in Driemond which is 3 kilometres from my home. So I had a nice warming-up as I walked to the start. There were a lot of friends and local athletes at the start and the atmosphere was very pleasant in sunny but very windy conditions.
There were a lot of distances to choose from ; 2.5K, 5K, 7.5K, 10K, 15K and the half marathon. I decided to do the 10K this time because the marathon is still in the legs. The first half was "easy" because of the tailwind and I started to quick 3 minutes and 45 seconds a K but after 3K I realised too late that I blew up and slowed down every kilometre.
I passed the 5 K mark in a time of 19:54 and then I knew that the worst part had to come with the opposing wind. As lunch I had some flies the last kilometres and I can tell you that I don't like the taste and struggled to the finish with a final sprint I could made it just under 42 minutes and finished in 41:54 which is really slow. Normally I have this as split-time in the half marathon but I didn't had big expectations before.
The positive thing in this race was a PB on the 5 K because I'd never done a 5 K race. I did one 5 K race when I was joining the army in 1992 for a year and finished in something like 21:47.
Compliments for those who've organised this event, the course was nice and the atmosphere was
very pleasant !
I will definitely come back next year !
Cheers
Martijn
